Protecting the Peace: United Nations Peacekeepers in the 21st Century

In 1918, French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau proclaimed, “Yes, we have won the war and not without difficulty; but now we are going to have to win the peace, and that will perhaps be even more difficult.” Today, this mission of peace continues around the globe. Since 1948, United Nations Peacekeepers have worked to separate warring parties and to protect people from the effects of armed conflict.

Join us for a panel featuring international military officers currently studying at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, where they discuss their most challenging and rewarding experiences and the questions surrounding the responsibility of protecting civilians and peace. The discussion will be followed by a brief wreath-laying ceremony on the Paul Sunderland Bridge in honor of fallen U.N. Peacekeepers. Presented in partnership with the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, the United Nations Association of Greater Kansas City and the International Student Division of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Sponsored by the International Relations Council, the Lawrence D. Starr Center for Peace and Justice at the University of Saint Mary, the Truman Library Institute, People to People International and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Foundation.

Doors open at 6 p.m with a reception. Panel begins at 6:30 p.m. FREE with RSVP | J.C. Nichols Auditorium and Lobby
